How to Search an Online Library Catalog : A Research Guide by Mike Palmquist

Browsing by Subject Heading

Browsing by subject heading allows you to find sources that are catalogued under specific subject headings. When catalogers create a record for a source in an online catalog, they assign subject headings to it, using a list of standard terms used by many other libraries. Many college and university libraries use the Library of Congress Classification System to organize their collections. Other libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification System. Both of these systems use subject headings to organize publications owned by a library.

In this tutorial, you'll browse by Library of Congress subject heading on SAGE, the Colorado State University online library catalog, located at http://sage.colostate.edu.
