How to Search an Online Library Catalog

Limit a Search by Publication Date

If you're working on a subject that is time-sensitive—such as recent developments in gene therapy or information about an event or period of time—you can limit your search by publication date. Publication dates are seldom a primary search criterion. Instead, they are used to limit searches—for example, to reduce the number of sources that are found by the library catalog so that only sources published during a certain time period are listed on the search results page.

This image shows a keyword search for education reform limited by date (after 1998 and before 2002) on the Colorado State University online library catalog (SAGE).
