How to Search an Online Library Catalog : A Research Guide by Mike Palmquist

Searching with Boolean Operators: Step 1

In this tutorial, we'll illustrate a Boolean search on Colorado State University's online library catalog, SAGE. The search will use a combination of keyword and phrase searches. (Note that although you might not attend Colorado State, your school's online library catalog will have similar search options.)

If you would like to complete the steps in this tutorial on your own, please visit the SAGE library catalog at http://sage.colostate.edu and carry out the following steps:

  1. Click on the Keyword tab. The "Keyword" page will open.
  2. Type hemingway in the first search field.
  3. Type "sun also rises" in the second search field.
  4. Type "old man and the sea" in the third search field.
  5. In the drop-down menu next to "sun also rises", choose the AND NOT option.
  6. Click on the Search button.
  7. Click on the Continue button below.
