How to Search an Online Library Catalog : A Research Guide by Mike Palmquist

Searching by Author: Step 1

In this tutorial, we'll illustrate an author search on the University of California Berkeley's online library catalog, Melvyl. (Note that although you might not attend UC Berkeley, your school's online library catalog will have similar search options.)

If you would like to complete the steps in this tutorial on your own, please visit Melvyl at http://melvyl.cdlib.org and carry out the following steps:

  1. Select "Author (last name first)" from the Search drop-down menu.
  2. Type Hemingway Ernest in the search field to the right. Most author search forms expect the last name to be provided first. Many also suggest separating the last and first names (or first initials) with a comma.
  3. Click on the Search button.
  4. Click on the Continue button below.
