Chapter 7: Avoiding Plagiarism

Even if you have kept careful notes during your research, you should also do a final check of your use of sources once you have completed your research project. Pay close attention to the two main elements of documenting your sources—in-text citations and end-of-text references. The in-text citations immediately follow the source you are summarizing, quoting, or paraphrasing; they can be parenthetical, as in MLA style, or footnotes or endnotes, as in Chicago style. References at the end of the essay (also called a works cited list or bibliography, depending on the documentation style) provide the complete publication information for each source. Checking your in-text citations and references will ensure that your project credits it sources correctly.
