Chapter 4: Reading Actively

To get the most out of reading sources, be sure you read with an attitude and read actively. These two strategies work together to help you become part of the conversation about your topic. Instead of simply reading a source and putting it aside, respond to the source as if you were in an actual conversation with its author. What questions would you ask? How would you respond to its assertions or ideas? Are you persuaded by its arguments, or do you have criticisms? What counterarguments can you think of? Can you connect this source to others you have encountered? Reading actively means putting all of these responses to a source down on paper.
