Chapter 16: Writing Concisely

One concrete and easy way to improve your writing is to trim the meaningless or unnecessary words and phrases we all use. If your instructor has ever asked you to “polish” your essay or work on your style, she probably wanted you to write more concisely. Concise writing is direct, lean, and to the point. By stripping away filler words or empty phrases, you make your ideas more prominent.
