When graphics are integrated with the text of a document, images and words work together to convey information effectively. Integrate graphics and text in a document by doing the following:
- Place the graphic in a logical location in the document.
- Introduce the graphic in the text.
- Explain the graphic in the text.
- Make the graphic clearly visible.
- Make the graphic easy to find.
Including a list of figures in a report or other long document will help readers find specific graphics.

The page below from a water resource report by the United States Geological Survey effectively integrates graphics and text. Both graphics are placed directly after or adjacent to the relevant point in the text, introduced by number (for example, fig. 12), explained in the text (for example, "Viewing average OP:TP ratio by month [fig. 13] further highlights the pronounced difference in ratio between Diversion and the other sites"), and made clearly visible. Note that each figure is accompanied by an informative caption.
