SECTION 1C: Organize the Presentation

With an understanding of your audience and purpose, organize the presentation so that your audience will understand your main points, their relationship to one another, and their relationship to your overall purpose. Here is a model of an effective outline for a presentation:
    Overview
    Introduction
    Body
    • First Major Point

      • Sub-points

    • Second Major Point

      • Sub-points

    • Third Major Point

      • Sub-Points
    Conclusion

Your presentation may, of course, include more or fewer major points, depending on your topic and purpose. You should also choose a pattern of development that is best for your purposes.

Example
An effective way to introduce your presentation to your audience is by presenting an overview slide, like the one below. This overview slide functions like an advance organizer for the presentation. The purpose of this slide is to give your audience a general idea of the content and organization of your entire presentation.
