Mike Markel's Web Design Tutorial
SECTION 1B: Analyze Your Audience and Purpose

How much does the audience know about your subject? Your answer will help you determine the level of technical vocabulary and concepts to use, as well as the best types of graphics. Why is your audience listening to your presentation? Are they likely to be hostile, enthusiastic, or neutral? If your audience is likely to be hostile, you might want to present your main conclusions and recommendations near the end, after you have had a chance to address your audience's concerns.

Example
General audiences need non-technical information and simple graphics. Because pie charts like the one below are clear to any audience, they are good choices for the general public.

Example
The following slide, prepared by a project engineer at the Fire Safety Branch of the Federal Aviation Administration, describes research on fuel flammability. The technical focus is appropriate for its expert audience.
