The American Museum of Photography This site specializes in online exhibitions of daguerreotypes and early photographic works. American Photography: A Century of Images The companion site to the PBS series of the same name offers a wonderful photographic resource, inviting us to view a century of images through cultural, social, and historical lenses. The site includes sections on art, photography and war, digital truth, presidential image making, persuasion, social change, and cultural identity. Artcyclopedia A simple and clear gateway to artists and artwork organized by galleries, image archives, museums, and more. Art History Links Pages Aptly named, "The Mother of All Art History Links Pages" is produced by the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan. Art in Context Compiled in 1995 by Art in Context Center for Communications, a publicly supported nonprofit organization, this online reference library has information about artists and where to find their work. The Art Museum Image Consortium In their words, "The Art Museum Image Consortium (AMICO) is a not–for–profit association of institutions with collections of art, that have come together to enable educational use of the digital documentation of their collections. Together, AMICO members are building a joint digital library that is available to universities and colleges, public libraries, and kindergarten through 12th grade schools." The collection contains over 50,000 images of North American, European, Asian, and African art. Although you can’t gain access to full-sized images without a membership (check to see if your college or university is a member), the site is very useful as a search tool. You can search through thumbnail images in the collection by keyword, date, and category. Art on the Net This site offers artists a place where they can have studios and gallery rooms that can be accessed on the web—visitors can visit studios and galleries, and explore other art-related sites. Art Web site Listing A collection of links to online museums, galleries, and art organizations around the world. Blind Spot: Photography The online site for Blind Spot, a photography magazine "committed to publishing visually enticing, unconventional, new and never-before-published work," shows numerous examples of artists who see the ordinary in extraordinary ways. The full text of the current and back issues includes interviews with and photographs by featured artists, as well as a choice selection of contemporary fiction. A gallery of "Artists A–Z" includes photographs by, among others, Chuck Close, William Eggleston, Richard Misrach, and Wolfgang Tillmans. Cartoon Art Museum Visit the Cartoon Art Museum Web site for a comprehensive list of online sources for cartoons. Guggenheim Museum Visit the Guggenheim’s special exhibits at this online museum without leaving your computer. Masters of Photography Articles, photographs, resources, and summaries of the recognized masters of this genre. National Gallery of Art A site that provides online tours and information on exhibitions in the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C. The site also includes links and information on upcoming events and programs in the art community. Orazio Centaro’s Art Images on the Web Billing itself as "the most complete catalogue of art images on the web," this site includes collections of architecture, painting, photography, and sculpture, as well as special exhibits. Sculpture Center A comprehensive site with international information on: sculpture exhibits, graduate programs, online resources in sculpture, a discussion forum, and highlights from Sculpture magazine. This is an excellent site at which to see how professional writers and critics talk about contemporary sculpture. The Smithsonian American Art Museum The Smithsonian American Art Museum currently offers over 3,000 works from its collections in digital form online, searchable by name of artist and medium. Note, as well, rotating featured exhibits such as "Posters, American Style" and "An Edward Hopper Scrapbook." Voice of the Shuttle: Art and Art History Page This academic database provides myriad links to online resources in art and art history. Web Gallery of Art An online gallery of European paintings and sculpture from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. The site includes commentaries and biographies, as well as information on each period. The Whitney Museum The Whitney Museum’s site is worth the visit for its most recent addition: "The American Century Online Exhibition," a multimedia version of the Whitney’s survey of American art and culture from 1900 to 2000. Special features include: additional commentary on selected artwork, a guided tour of the exhibit, and the option to create your own tour by selecting works to return to or share with someone else. World Wide Arts Resources "The definitive, interactive gateway to all exemplars of qualitative arts information and culture on the Internet." Yahoo!'s Listing of College and University Arts Sites Yahoo!'s links to galleries, museums, and special exhibits at colleges and universities around the country. Adbusters Uncommercials, campaigns, and the full text of the print magazine are all geared to help people become more critical consumers of advertisements. American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library The Library of Congress has digitized a sampling of its Americana collections and compiled them in this thoroughly searchable site. Packed with photos, recorded sound, and full texts of historical documents, the site contains images and texts from such collections as "By Popular Demand: ‘Votes for Women’ Suffrage Pictures, 1850–1920," "Origins of American Animation," and "African American Perspectives: Pamphlets from the Daniel A. P. Murray Collection, 1818–1907." American Studies Web An excellent, well-written, and frequently updated resource maintained by the American Studies Crossroads Project. Contains reviews of new American Studies sites, as well as sections on Art and Material Culture, Current Events and Legal Studies, and General Resources. Arts and Letters Daily "At this stage in its evolution the Web resembles a typical Australian goldfield, with vast mountains of low-grade ore," writes the editor of Arts and Letters Daily in a note of welcome to the site. "Precious nuggets are out there to be found, however, and it’s the mission of Arts and Letters Daily to extract them for our readers." If the links to essays and articles on current events and culture don’t entice you, the list of links to major newspapers, magazines, and journals, as well as a selection of individual columnists, will make it worth bookmarking this site. Arts Journal Edited by Douglas McLennan, a former arts reporter with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, this site offers annotated links to selected articles on arts and cultural issues on a daily basis. The site promises the best journalism chosen from "more than 180 English-language newspapers, magazines, and publications featuring writing about arts and culture." Cultural Objects: An Anthology of American Studies This anthology of hypertext projects by students taking a course on American icons at the University of Virginia includes research strategies and links for the study of icons and hypertext techniques. Media–Culture.Org.Au An online journal of articles and commentaries pertaining to cultural issues and the media. The site includes reviews and information on cultural events and performances. The Onion A Web site that uses satirical humor to highlight current cultural and political issues. The writers' use of hyperbole and imagination makes the information provided both amusing and, at times, poignant. Salon The media section of the online magazine Salon. This American Life A weekly radio show produced by WBEZ in Chicago that weaves stories, interviews, and commentary on cultural themes and phenomena as diverse as childhood play and hospital diplomacy. The site allows you to read through transcripts of past shows or download Real Audio files. TV Barn The TV junkies’ heaven, TV Barn is a Web site written and managed by Aaron Barnhart, television writer at the Kansas City Star. The site includes Barnhart’s TV criticism; "The Daily Digest," a listing of television events and daily notables; Nielsen ratings; and a comprehensive science fiction column.
