Formatting Web addresses (55a, 60a)
Formatting a works cited list or a reference list (55a or 60a)
FORMATTING WEB ADDRESSES
If your
word processing program automatically turns Web addresses into hot links (by
underlining them and highlighting them in color), turn off this feature before
formatting your Works Cited list. To do so in Microsoft Word, follow these
steps:
- From the Tools menu, select AutoCorrect.
- Choose the tab “AutoFormat As You Type,” and then deselect “Internet and network paths with
hyperlinks.”
FORMATTING A REFERENCE LIST
MLA and APA guidelines require indenting the second and subsequent lines of each entry
in the list of references. You can set this pattern, called a hanging indent,
in one of two ways: by using the ruler at the top of your word processing page
or by using the Format menu.
In Microsoft Word, the ruler looks like this:
The program allows you to control the position of the left margin and the hanging
indent. Set your markers this way when you write your list of works cited or
your list of references.
To set hanging indents by using the Format menu instead, follow these steps:
- From the Format menu, choose Paragraph.
- Click on the “Indents and Spacing” tab.
- In the “Indentation” section of the dialog box, choose “Hanging” from the drop-down
menu under “Special.”
