Her presentation uses both verbal and visual elements to achieve two key objectives: to capture her audience's attention and to persuade them to take action to preserve arts education for children in public schools. Both Tessa's PowerPoint slides and the script for her accompanying presentation speech are included below. back to top PowerPoint Presentation: Ajani Husbands and Taurean Brown, "Project W.R.I.T.E." Ajani Husbands and Taurean Brown worked together to create these PowerPoint slides for a presentation they gave at a recent Northern California Writing Center Association conference. Ajani and Taurean focused their presentation on Stanford University's "Project W.R.I.T.E.," which they used as a model to discuss the ways that writing centers can expand their activities beyond the academic classroom to serve their universities and neighboring communities. back to top PowerPoint Presentation: Ben Canning, "Health Is Golden" Ben Canning's presentation on the importance of a healthy lifestyle is both an excellent model of a persuasive argument and an example of how to present an argument before an audience. Ben designed his PowerPoint slides using images that augment, rather than simply reiterate, the results of his study. And by practicing in front of a video camera, Ben perfected his delivery, stage presence, and relationship with the audience. Check out the video clip below to observe Ben's presentation skills in action as he presents his visually dynamic PowerPoint project to his class. The video file requires the Windows Media Player. You can download Windows Media Player software at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp On a T1 connection, this file should load immediately. Dial-up users will experience a significantly longer wait time. back to top Radio Essay: Jessica Thrower, "Dr. Seuss and the Path to Advocating Human Equality" Jessica Thrower created this radio essay for a rhetoric course in which students were asked to create a radio essay that dealt with remembrances of a person, place, or event. Jessica chose to focus on the famed children's author Dr. Seuss. She began her project by researching Dr. Seuss to learn more about his life and his books. Next, Jessica turned her attention to creating the script for her radio essay. First, she freewrote to generate ideas; then she carefully refined her writing. After finalizing the script, Jessica considered what audio elements to add to bring the essay to life in the medium of sound and eventually decided to format the essay's introduction as a back-and-forth dialogue between two people. Jessica then recorded and edited her essay on a computer, using a digital sound-editing program. back to top |
