Introduction

This section of the site provides information on documenting sources. If you are unfamiliar with the general guidelines for the documentation style you are using, are unsure of how to cite a source within the text of your essay, or just need to know how to set up a list of the works you have cited, you will find the detailed instructions and examples that you need to complete your projects.

We've included four common documentation styles here:

formats prescribed by the Modern Language Association (MLA style)
formats prescribed by the American Psychological Association (APA style)
formats prescribed in The Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago style)
formats prescribed by the Council of Science Editors (CSE style)

MLA style is commonly used for writing in the humanities (especially in the literature and languages disciplines); APA style is widely used in the social sciences; Chicago style has long been used in history, as well as in other areas of the arts and humanities; and CSE style is often used by writers in the sciences and mathematics.
