Week 1:
If you have not been assigned a topic, start thinking about an interesting general subject. Make an overview of your topic by searching your library database and the Internet.
 
Week 2:
Begin narrowing your topic to a workable research question. Conduct a preliminary search on your research question. Start your working bibliography and research archive.
 
Week 3:
Begin your research in earnest. Locate and evaluate your most promising sources. Take notes.
 
Week 4:
Continue narrowing your research, identifying promising sources, evaluating them as you go along, and taking efficient notes.
 
Week 5:
Begin your preliminary outline and state your thesis. Continue to update your bibliography and research archive, putting your sources in the order in which you think you might use them.
 
Week 6:
Refine your thesis statement. Start your first draft.
 
Week 7:
Complete your first draft. Begin thinking about ways to revise and improve it. Seek feedback from a peer reviewer.
 
Week 8:
Revise and edit your draft. Check that you have used quotations properly and consistently. Carefully go over your documentation. Finally, proofread the entire paper, checking for any errors.
