The Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, Third Edition
Sponsored by the Electric Library, this site offers free access to more than 17,000 entries.

World Wide Words
Devoted to the etymology of words, this extensive site gives definitions of common and obscure words and includes a question-and-answer feature for finding the origins of familiar sayings and turns of phrase.

Bartleby
This site provides links to dictionaries and thesauruses, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, Strunk and White's Elements of Style, The World Factbook, and many other reference sources. In addition, many classic works of fiction and nonfiction can be accessed online, free of charge.

Citing Electronic Resources
Hosted by the Internet Public Library, this site contains links to various sources (including the MLA Guide and a guide in Spanish) that explain how to document information found online.

Right Writer's Resources Information Center
An extensive site whose unusual features include an illustrated guide to proofreading, links to encyclopedias of specific topics, and grammar and punctuation guides offering "how-to" advice.
