Transcript Lesson 17 Essentials Video: Publishing
CHASE: Having a really clean paper and having it formatted to either the way they want or in a way that's very readable—double-spaced, easy for the Professor to make comments in, things like that, making the professor's life easier in that way.
CHATIANA: I think format is a good way to show how much you care about the paper. If you care about the paper you want people to know, I wrote this and this is my feelings towards it. So I'm going to have good format for it.
DANNY: I think a lot of people just get sloppy with the end game. And it's like, why do you spend all this time writing this huge paper and then at the end when you turn it in you don't even make it look good?
AMY: Part of it was the writing, but the other part was the designing, which—I had no idea, but it really coincides with the writing. Like, the designing is so important, and it should really reflect what you're trying to say.
CARA: Sometimes it is really difficult to devote the time to getting it done right. Especially when you have work and school, and you have so many other things that you have to be doing. But when it's complete and I'm done with the essay, I feel really good about it because I feel—if I've put in that time—that it's a reflection of a strong argument, and that—I want my teacher to read it because it's like, I worked hard on this. Please read it. [LAUGHING]
HANNAH: When I turn something in it's like turning in a part of me. So when I turn that in I kind of want it to be really good.
AIME'E: When I write a paper, hopefully it'll reach somebody, or it has purpose, it's not just rushed. And even if I did rush it, there's so much purpose and intent behind it that it shows.
GREGG: If you're doing work that you plan on publishing, ultimately your stakes are going to be higher, again, because there's a larger audience. You're not just going for the A. And in shooting for a publishable work, your A is going to happen.
MARCUS: When I hand my papers in after the whole process of two weeks, or even the one-week process—because I work, too, to pay for school, so I'm busting my butt. So when I actually hand my paper in, it feels great because I know that I accomplished another step into achieving my degree. I took a step closer to that, obtaining my goal. And knowing that I have to pay for school, I'm doing more than other students that are just having things given to them. And it feels good to me to know that I'm doing the extra to get my paper done, getting higher grades than them, as also paying for school myself. So I just feel accomplished after every essay I turn in.
ERICA: As I started to compile a paper and it started to come together, I started being impressed with myself. You know? And the day that it was due I held the paper in my hand and I gave it to my professor, and I said, I'm proud of myself.
